SHASTA COUNTY, Calif. – Shasta County Deputies arrested a man Sunday who they said was involved in a string of crimes.

The Shasta County Sheriff’s Office said they were patrolling the area of Newscott Lane in Ono on Sunday looking for a wanted man, Jake Houser.

Houser had two felony arrest warrants for robbery. One warrant was for robbing the Midway Market at gunpoint at 9 a.m. on December 8, 2019.

The second warrant was regarding Houser threatening his mother on January 11, 2020. He then assaulted her and took her car by means of force and fear constituting robbery, according to the sheriff’s office.

Houser was considered armed and dangerous based on these crimes, as well as the information received by the Sheriff’s Office that Houser was claiming he wouldn’t be taken into custody without a fight, according to the sheriff’s office.

According to deputies, Houser was found near an unoccupied cabin at the end of Newscott Lane at 4:30 p.m. Houser ran from the deputies into the cabin and attempted to block off the front door from authorities.

Additional deputies were called on the scene. They said they eventually set up a perimeter around the cabin. During that time, deputies said they heard a single gunshot from inside the cabin. The bullet went through a wall and struck the ground between two patrol cars that deputies were standing behind as cover.

Houser was talking over the phone with a deputy, claiming he was heavily armed, the house was a stronghold and he had a grenade, deputies said.

The SWAT team responded and Hostage Negotiating Team (HNT) were all trying to convince Houser to come out peacefully.

Deputies said at one point Houser agreed to throw out one of his weapons and threw out at 30-30 caliber rifle. For several hours, negotiations continued. Eventually, Houser agreed to surrender and walked out of the cabin.

The SWAT team did a sweep of the cabin after Houser was arrested and found a loaded AK47 rifle, the inside of the house was heavily barricaded and no explosives were found, deputies said.

Houser was arrested for his warrants with additional charges to be filed once the investigations are completed.

It wasn't as hot for northern California today, but temperatures still reached seasonable summer levels and more thunderstorms sprung over our eastern counties. After one more seasonable day, hotter weather will return to our area.
