SHASTA COUNTY, Calif. – People 75 and older in Shasta County will be able to get COVID-19 vaccines starting Tuesday, Jan. 19, according to the county’s Health and Human Services. People 65 and older will be eligible starting Feb. 1.

This comes after the California Department of Public Health announced Wednesday that it is immediately allowing residents 65 and older to get scarce coronavirus vaccines.

“More information on how these groups can sign up to be vaccinated will be announced as soon as details are finalized,” said Shasta County Health and Human Services.

Shasta County residents who are healthcare personnel or 75 years of age and older are welcome to call Shingletown Medical Center at 474-3390 to schedule an appointment to be vaccinated. Public Health says it is working with other local clinics to schedule eligible groups for vaccine, as well as enrolling additional medical offices with the state so they can also vaccinate people.

Health officials ask residents to check the ShastaReady Vaccinations page for instructions when your group is eligible.

Meanwhile, Public Health and its partners said they continue to vaccinate people at the highest risk of exposure, including health care personnel and long-term care residents and staff.

Shasta County Public Health has received 11,075 vaccines so far, which does not include vaccine provided through the federal government to the Veterans Administration or to local tribal clinics. Demand far exceeds supply.

The county said it has 14,000 licensed healthcare workers and 36,500 residents over age 65, so it will take some time to vaccinate all people who wish to receive vaccine, and each person needs two
doses.

While Shasta County is following the state rollout plan, each county is going at a different pace, depending on the number of healthcare workers they have and the amount of vaccine they receive.

There is also a mass vaccination clinic planned for Saturday, Jan. 16, at Benton Airpark in Redding for In-Home Supportive Services providers who provide services outside of their home and have multiple clients, and to Community Health Workers who do hands-on, direct patient care, and do not work for a health center or hospital.

Hours for last names between A-M are 9 to 11:30 a.m., and for last names between N-Z, hours are 11:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. Health officials ask you to bring the completed pre-registration paperwork, identification, and proof of employment as an IHSS worker or Community Health Worker.

Health officials are asking you to not attend this vaccination clinic if you have history of anaphylaxis or
severe allergies.

After plenty of morning clouds, we had plentiful sunshine this afternoon with weaker wind and warmer highs. The clear sky and light wind will lead to a chillier start Friday morning, and we'll have a breezy and mild Friday before more changes arrive.
