Santa Clara County has just taken a step toward banning gun shows.

The exploratory measure would ban gun shows at the county fairgrounds by outlawing the sale or possession of firearms on county property.

The move was in response to the Florida high school shooting and applauded by gun control advocates and a group of students who came to the meeting from Prospect High School.

But gun supporters are afraid the measure could be used to close the popular shooting sports gun range in south San Jose operated by the county parks department.

"It derives a tremendous amount of revenue, and interests thousands and thousands of people that enjoy that recreational facility every single year," said Dave Truslow, resident and gun supporter.

"If we are looking as a county to be focused on gun safety, we don't eliminate opportunities for people to learn how to use recreationally use guns in a safe way," said Cindy Chavez, who serves on the Board of Supervisors.

Supervisors have spoken up saying they don't want the county to lose the gun range, which is the one place where people can learn to operate guns safely.
