UPDATE 10:56 p.m. Tuesday, November 5, 2019 - Deputies have arrested a woman who they say embezzled $63,100 from a 75-year-old Camp Fire survivor.

29-year-old Brenda Rose Asbury was arrested for elder abuse, embezzlement, and grand theft.

The arrest was a part of an investigation that has been going on since July 30, 2019. At that time, the Butte County Sheriff's Office says it learned that Asbury had embezzled $63,100 from a 75-year-old Camp Fire survivor. The embezzled money was part of an insurance settlement the Camp Fire survivor obtained after losing his house in the Camp Fire, according to deputies.

In September, detectives obtained an arrest warrant for Asbury. For the past month, detectives have been searching for Asbury.

Throughout the investigation, detectives determined Asbury was living in Tulsa, Oklahoma. Oklahoma law enforcement helped locate and arrest Asbury, authorities said. On Nov. 1, detectives spoke with an attorney hired by Asbury. Authorities said they informed the attorney that Asbury needed to contact law enforcement immediately.

On Nov. 4, Detectives said Asbury showed up at the Butte County Sheriff's Office and told them she spent the last three days driving from Oklahoma.

Detectives placed Asbury under arrest. She is expected to be arraigned on Thursday, Nov. 7 at 3 p.m. in the Butte County Superior Court.

The Sheriff’s Office is asking anyone with information about this investigation to contact Detective Will Brewton at 530-538-7671.

A weak disturbance passed over northern California early this morning, but as expected, it only brought some gusty wind, a few clouds, slightly cooler weather, and no rain. Much bigger changes to our weather will occur this weekend.
