SHASTA COUNTY, Calif. - Shasta County’s Sheriff-Coroner Eric Magrini formally announced his resignation from the sheriff’s office and will begin his new position as Assistant County Executive Officer, the Sheriff’s Administrative Association (SAA) said.
The SAA said it notified the Shasta County Board of Supervisors about its "concerns with leadership, morale and potentially illegal and unethical behaviors" by Magrini and Undersheriff Jason Barnhard. However, the SAA did not elaborate on those claims.
The SAA said the CEO Matt Pontes referred the matter to local Private Investigator Diane Davis for the investigation.
Davis had previous working relationships with the Sheriff’s Office personnel so the SAA requested an outside investigator to prevent a conflict of interest, according to the SAA.
Attorney Leslie Ellis of Ellie and Makus, LLC took over the investigation, the SAA said.
The SAA said 15 areas of concern were identified, with 11 areas not sustained and four sustained.
The four sustained were listed as “inadvertent mistakes” made in the hiring process or statements made by the Sheriff out of frustration, the SAA said.
The full timeline and statement from the SAA are below.
Action News Now reached out to Magrini and is working on a response.
