Congressional Representative John Garamendi of California's 3rd District (D) provided this comment on the acquittal of Donald Trump, former President of the US, by the US Senate on Saturday.
3rd District Representative John Garamendi (D-CA)
“Elected officials take a solemn oath to defend the Constitution against all enemies foreign and domestic. President Trump betrayed his oath when he incited a riotous mob to attack the U.S. Capitol, which killed five people including Capitol Police officers who were honoring their oath to protect and defend the U.S. Capitol. President Trump used false claims of election fraud to encourage this armed mob to attack the seat of our democracy and undermine the results of a free and fair election.
The Senate’s acquittal of President Trump today, days before our nation recognizes President’s Day, is an unconscionable abdication of responsibility. Lawmakers must bear allegiance for their Constitution—which calls upon them to take these critically important actions to defend our democracy—rather than a political party or individual.
I thank the incredibly talented Impeachment Managers who methodically outlined the strong case for impeachment before the Senate this week. While I am deeply disturbed by the outcome, I thank the Senators who voted to defend our democracy and our Constitution today and made this the most bipartisan impeachment vote in U.S. history.
I will not lose faith or abate my efforts to ensure America remains a shining beacon of hope for democracy and prosperity for generations to come.”
