Redding to Clean up City With Solar Trash Cans

Redding to Clean up City With Solar Trash Cans

Posted: Apr 19, 2018 6:58 PM

Redding, Calif -- Millions of dollars a year are spent on cleaning up cities in America.
But now the City of Redding is taking a proactive approach to a trashy situation.
On Wednesday, Redding Public Works officials got to work installing 18 new solar trash cans.

These trash cans were placed in various areas including the post office, downtown , and walking trails.
The trash cans use solar energy to compact trash and then alert official when it's full.
"Its suppose to improve efficiency and collection. it also sends out a signal so that our parks department that are collecting the trash out of them will know when they are full so it'll safe time, and then we won't be going around checking empty cans," said Clemens.
This improvement is part of "The Litter Abatement Program" which the city council voted on in September.
And they say that this project will clean up the city, and is one step at stopping the spread of litter and trash.
"Also cut down on wind blown litter and scavenging and people pulling garbage out and garbage spread around. "
And with sunny days ahead these trash cans will help people enjoy the clean , fresh, outdoors.
"It's kinda cool. It kinda sucks riding by a stinky trash can or like trash around the trash can and you're out enjoying a day like this and then you just smell trash and someone has been through it already all over the trail and its annoying," said Wiley Hutchens.
You can check out these trash cans at any of these locations.
