REDDING, Calif. - A Redding man was arrested on Wednesday after police said he attacked his family with an axe.

The attack happened just before 8 a.m. on Wednesday morning in the area of Galway Drive, according to police.

Police said 73-year-old Theodore Loos attacked his family over what they said were a number of reasons, including financial problems.

Neighbors in the area told police they were not expecting the call to be violent because they know and trust their neighbors.

"My grandchildren are older and they have a friend on this street," said Gail Bowen, a neighbor in the area. "My youngest is just six and I wouldn't have any problem with her playing with the neighbor."

Police said the wife is in critical condition with fractures to her skull.

The children, who are ages 10 and 14, were treated and released from the hospital.

It took a few hours, but the sun broke through the clouds over most of northern California Tuesday afternoon. The low clouds, fog and light rain showers return to the valley Wednesday, with snowy weather in the mountains.
