REDDING, Calif. – A Redding family gave a landmark gift to the City of Redding.
George Emmerson, and his sons Garet, Collin, and Dane, and their wives donated $1 million to the city for a public art piece. The art piece will honor Susan Emmerson, who passed away this year.
The art piece will be added along the Sacramento River Trail, right next to Stress Ribbon Bridge.
Susan walked the trail regularly with her friend and family and also taught art to many kids.
“The river trails is a place of solace and peace for most of us,” said Kim Niemer, the Director of Community Services, “creating another landmark to visit there will be a real welcome to everyone.
“The river trail is just a beautiful environment and lots of people use it.”
The money will also provide new paint, paving, and maintenance for Stress Ribbon Bridge.
The city plans to search for artists all over the world to create the art piece. The city says it will take a year before actual installation happens.
On Tuesday night the Redding City Council voted to accept the million-dollar gift.
