A Redding boy is using social media to challenge members of the community to join him in his quest to honor veterans.
Preston Sharp, is known near and far for his work honoring the graves of fallen veterans.
But now he's taking to the internet to invite others to join in on his passion.
“Hi, my name is Preston Sharp. And I'm coming to you with the F and F challenge,” Preston said in a video he posted to Facebook.
The video has already reached nearly four-thousand views, and Preston is hoping his campaign goes viral.
The F and F Challenge or Flags and Flowers Challenge is very simple.
You place a flag and a flower on the grave of a fallen veteran and nominate someone else to do the same.
“And then you clean the gravestone off if there's anything on it,” Preston said. “And then you say their name out loud and then thank you for your service. So in this case, Omar thank you for your service. And that's my F and F Challenge.”
Monday Shasta County Supervisor Les Baugh and Shasta County Sheriff Tom Bosenko did their versions of the F and F Challenge at Anderson Cemetery.
“Don, thank you for your service and God bless you,” Baugh said as he honored the grave of his father-in-law.
“To John Wilson, thank you for your service to our nation,” Bosenko said as he honored another veteran. “It is very much appreciated.”
Baugh and Bosenko were personally nominated by Preston to do the challenge and said they gladly accepted.
“I just wanted to accept the Flowers and Flags challenge and pay my respects to a veteran here and decorate that person's gravesite,” Bosenko said.
For Baugh, honoring his father-in-law made the challenge a no-brainer.
“So this is very personal to just love on and respect and honor those who have served,” he said.
Preston was not available to talk because of his school schedule, but his mother April Sharp said he just woke up with the idea one day.
Bosenko said he's not surprised as Preston has already done so much to honor those who served their country.
“What a great idea for Preston to challenge others, to get others involved and decorate the graves of our veterans,” Bosenko said.
To participate, post your F and F Challenge video to Instagram using the hashtag #FandFChallenge and nominate someone else or tag as many people as possible to do the same.
For those who don’t use social media but still want to help Preston honor fallen veterans, he’s scheduled to place flags and flowers at Chico's Glenn Oaks Cemetery on Sunday at noon.
