REDDING, Calif - At the young age of 9, Rafael Helbig-Kostka entered his first choir class
That’s when teachers saw something in him and he soon after began music lessons.
“but after being in choir with him he spoke with my mom he was liek i'd really like to give your son voice lessons. I was like absolutely I think this is a sign," said Helbig-Kostka.
Through years of school Rafael tells Action News Now, that core classes like English and math were never his strong suit.
But one day in English, while writing in his journal, he was contemplating how everyone around him knew what they wanted to do then it hit him he should study music.
"I don't know what I'm doing with my life. I'm obvisouly not going to those places I don't know then it hit me. I should do music," said Helbig-Kostka.
Now, years later, and two music degrees in hand Rafeal is returning from South Africa where he performed at Bach’s St. John Passion to the place that sparked his passion Redding.
Unfortunately for Redding residents he isn’t spending much time here because he’s continuing his fairy tale and joining the opera studio of the Landesthear Linz in Linz, Austira for the 2018 - 2019 season.
“ I’m sure there are other things that I can do but it’s not what I do," said Helbig-Kostka.
