REDDING, Calif. -The City of Redding will be looking at expanding internet services, but Redding Electric Utility needs to expand its fiber network system. REU would run a fiber system between its facilities.
Last year, the city council directed REU to design a fiber optic ring. The City of Redding would then able to increase the fiber count. The City would add 288 fibers to that ring, which means faster more reliable internet connections for government services.
“What that does is that it provides optionality, it lets the city use that for general city government,” said Redding City Manager Barry Tippin. “It lets the other utilities use it and it gives us some options whether or not we want to do fiber to the home or if we simply want to connect with other governmental agencies. It simply opens up more options in the future.”
The city council will also be looking at whether it wants to create an internet utility and provide services to homes in Redding.
The Redding City Council will also be looking a construction funding for Phase 1 and design funding for Phase 2 for this project.
Last summer, Redding City Council approved Phase 1 of the project.
