RED BLUFF, Calif. – The Red Bluff Police Department has released a video discussing the Oct. 20 officer-involved shooting on Gilmore Road.
Red Bluff Police Chief Kyle Sanders said calls were reporting a white man, later identified as 36-year-old Joseph Lloyd Thompson, of Red Bluff, walking on Gilmore Road carrying what was being reported as an "automatic rifle."
Red Bluff PD said that Sergeant Kevin Bowen and Corporal Stephen Harper were the two involved officers. Both have discharged their duty weapons. The two officers were not injured in this incident.
Once Police arrived on the 300 block of Gilmore Road, Thompson walked outside the front door of a home armed with a rifle, according to the video.
Thompson pointed the gun at the officers, at which time he was shot by Corporal Harper, according to the video. Thompson went down but raised his gun a second time, and Sgt. Bowen fired. Thompson was incapacitated and the officers quickly approached him and removed his rifle.
Thompson was flown to a hospital for treatment, where he is still recovering from his injuries, according to Chief Sanders.
In the video, Chief Sanders said at this time they are still not sure of what Thompsons intentions were.
The Tehama County District Attorney Bureau of Investigation is handling the investigation. The Red Bluff Police Department is also conducting its own internal affairs investigation, per standard protocol.
