President Trump left Washington, D.C., Saturday morning, bound for Butte County, after the death toll from the Camp Fire climbed to 71 and the number of people unaccounted for jumped to more than 1,000.

President Trump visited what remains of the destructive Camp Fire with Governor Jerry Brown and Governor-elect Gavin Newsom, Paradise Town Mayor Jody Jones and several representatives from both local, state and federal branches of government.

We’ve put together a recap of notable statements on different subjects President Trump touched on during his visit.

On the destructive Camp Fire:

“I don’t think we’ll have this again to this extent. Hopefully this is going to be the last of these because this was a really, really bad one.”

“Right now we want to take care of the people who have been so badly hurt.”

“But we have incredible people doing the job.”

“This is very sad to see. As far as the lives are concerned, nobody knows quite yet.”

“Nobody would have ever thought this could happen.”

On the emergency response to the Camp Fire:

“Law enforcement’s been beyond anything that anybody could have believed. To see what’s happened here, nobody ever thought this could have happened. So the federal government is behind you, we’re all behind each other.”

“(Governor) Jerry (Brown) and I have been speaking, and (Governor-elect) Gavin (Newsom) and I have now gotten to know each other. We’re all going to work together and we’ll do a real job.”

“We have the greatest people in the world looking and helping. Law enforcement, always. They never let us down. They never let us down.”

Addressing McCarthy: “Kevin, anything we can do, you know we’re here. You just bring it over to the office, okay?”

“They’re (fire fighters) out there fighting and they’re fighting like hell. It’s like total devastation.”

On situation that lead to Camp Fire and conditions:

Asked whether climate change was a factor “I think you have a lot of factors. Right now that seems to be a very big problem.”
Asked if the fire had changed his mind on climate change, Trump said: “No, no. I have a strong opinion. I want a great climate. I think we’re going to have that and I think we’re going to have forests that are really safe.”

Referring to forest management and environmental policy “I think we’re all on the same path. We do have to do management.”
“We do have to do (forest) management, maintenance. We’ll be working also with environmental groups. I think everybody’s seen the light. Hopefully this is going to be the last one of these, because this was a really, really bad one.”

“I know (Governor-elect) Gavin’s committed, we’re all committed, I’m committed to make sure that we get all of this cleaned out and protected. We’ve got to take care of the floors, you know the floors of the forest, it’s very important.”

On forest management and fire suppression in Finland, what he calls “a forest nation.” They spend a lot of time raking and cleaning and doing things, and they don’t have any problem,” Trump said. “I know everybody’s looking at that.”
