CHICO, Calif. - Dozens celebrated National California Poppy Day at the ninth annual Poppy Walk and 5K Run Saturday at Lower Bidwell Park.

People participated in timed and untimed 5K runs or an untimed one-mile walk at One-Mile Recreation Area.

The event benefits the Peg Taylor Center and aims to bring awareness for senior citizens in the community. The Peg Taylor Center brings aid to adults with health needs, especially older adults.

Diane Puckett, the founding Executive Director of the Peg Taylor Center, said they chose the Poppy to represent strength and resilience.

"It blooms under the most challenging of conditions and that's what makes the center special and this event special was really celebrating that people can bloom even when they have health conditions when they have the right kind of support," Puckett said.

The event raised $27,000 this year, all thanks to the help of their sponsors and people that participated in the run.
