Police will be out in full force this New Year’s weekend and they're looking for more than just drunk drivers.
California Highway Patrol officers throughout the state have been trained in "advanced roadside impaired driving enforcement or "a-ride".
This training helps them better detect people driving under the influence of street drugs, prescription drugs, and cannabis.
In fact according to the CHP a 2012 roadside study showed twice as many drivers tested positive for drug impairing substances than for alcohol.
CHP says, "It's not that alcohol does something very specific to an individual while driving and another drug substance does something entirely different, all substances that impair in terms of drugs that impair driving, manifest themselves in different ways."
The California Highway Patrol declares a maximum enforcement period during the major holidays.
