Butte County, Calif -- One of the most exciting holidays of the year can also be the most frightening for our pets.

In fact, on July 5th many shelters are flooded with runaway dogs.

And then there are those dog owners who just have to skip out on the fourth of july festivities because they have to stay home to comfort their pets.

Here's what some Chico dog owners are doing this year.

"I try to keep him indoors so that he doesn't see the freworks and keep the TV going," said Bob Ellingson.

"Barks a lot, and hides" ..." Mine doesn't handle it at all, he just goes crazy" said the Goudy's.

"I'm going to stay home and gage how he reacts, he's been pretty good with noises so far," said Meghan Estes.

"She doesn't know what's happening so I have to put her in a bathroom or bedroom or hold her during the fireworks," said Rita Staats.

So there are a few things you can do to protect your pet from getting spooked by loud fireworks shows - eep them inside at night and turn up the TV.

Use a leash and get them out early in the day.

Also, make sure that your pet has a collar and ID, just in case they get out.
