BUTTE COUNTY, Calif. - The newly approved ice skating rink in Chico City Plaza is expected to be open during the same time that Paradise's annual ice rink is open.
Janel Williams, who lives in Magalia, says that Chico should not be allowed to open the rink because it will negatively affect the fire rebuilding efforts in Paradise.
"I think it’s a real shame for Chico wanting to do that and pull business away from the Paradise area. We don’t have a lot of businesses up here as it is. They’re creating competition that was unnecessary," Williams said.
The first Paradise on Ice outdoor rink was in 2013. This will be Chico's first outdoor ice skating rink as they have been planning for it the past three to four years.
John Machedo, who lives in Paradise, said he just moved back this weekend as his house was destroyed by the Camp Fire and wants people to focus more on why the rinks are built and the joy that comes from the holiday season.
"Well, it’s all about the kids really right? The opportunity for the kids to have this special time during the holidays," Machado said. "If Chico, more power to them if they have an ice rink then we’re right down the mountain. Then we have an ice rink here.”
Paradise on Ice will open daily from Nov. 11 till Jan. 17, while the ice skating rink in Chico plans to open Nov. 19 till Jan. 9.
