Park Fire in Bidwell Park 100% contained

CAL FIRE says the Park Fire has burned an estimated 402 acres and is completely contained.

UPDATE 11:25 a.m. Sunday - A CAL FIRE official told Action News Now that the Park Fire is now completely contained. CAL FIRE crews will be moving to a patrol-only status.

UPDATE 5:32 p.m. Saturday - The City of Chico is now restricted vehicle access to parts of Upper Bidwell Park due to the clean-up operations for the park Fire. Traffic in the park is only allowed up to the Bidwell Park Golf Course at this time.


UPDATE 11:10 a.m. Saturday - Though different containment percentage numbers are being reported for this fire on Saturday morning, CAL FIRE has the latest figures showing 75% containment.

The gate to Upper Bidwell Park is open and traffic is allowed through. Visitors are being asked to avoid the trails on the northern slope.

Park and fire officials said Saturday that hazardous areas include the trails and some open spaces.


UPDATE 9:52 a.m. Saturday - The Park Fire burning on Upper Park Road and in Upper Bidwell Park on Chico's northeast side, is now 75% contained. The fire is under a unified command of the CAL FIRE Butte Unit and the City of Chico.  The cause is still under investigation.


UPDATE 3:00 p.m. Friday - CAL FIRE said they have stopped the forward progress of the Park Fire that burned 402 acres in Upper Bidwell Park in Chico. 

The fire is 25% contained and resources will be on scene to continue working for full containment. 

They have a total of 240 people on the fire.

CAL FIRE said the initial report came in at 9:36 p.m. Thursday night. 


UPDATE 10:52 a.m. Friday - The previous report had the Park Fire at 400 acres, but with better mapping tools, CAL FIRE reduced the size of the fire. 

They said the fire is still 25% contained.


UPDATE 7:20 a.m. - CAL FIRE reports the Park Fire is now 600 acres and is 25% contained. There are no evacuation orders or warnings in place. 

The fire has burned past the limits of the city park and is now burning in the county fire protection area. CAL FIRE said aircraft will be flying this morning to assist with containment.

Chico Fire says crews will be mopping up for several days to make sure the fire does not break containment.

CHICO, Calif. - CAL FIRE and the Chico Fire Department are on the scene of a fire in Upper Bidwell Park.

Chico Fire said at 3 a.m. on Friday, it had burned an estimated 500 acres. Fire Chief Steve Standridge said as of now there are no evacuations.

This is being called the Park Fire. It started around 9:30 p.m. Thursday night, on the north side of Bear Hole.

The park has been closed.

Chico Fire Chief Steve Standridge says crews are working to make a fire break near Horseshoe Lake, and that they do have the fire contained at Upper Rim Trail. Now, they're working hot spots and containment on Lower Rim Trail. But there is no containment estimate.

Action News Now has a reporter on the scene and will bring you more information as we learn it. Right now the cause has not been determined.

Thankfully, the wind is cooperating much better today in northern California. Our weather is still quite hot for this time of year and very dry. There is plenty of haze and smoke from the Fawn Fire overhead, and it isn't leaving yet.
