NORTHERN CALIFORNIA - Starting in July of 2019 PG&E will be inspecting gas meters for thousands of customers in Shasta, Butte, and Glenn counties.
They will begin the inspections next week in Shasta County to ensure safe operation of their natural gas system and where it hooks to homes.
Through July and August PG&E will be visiting homes and businesses in Butte and Glenn counties as well.
Officials said not everyone will be inspected, only about 18,000 customers.
PG&E spokesperson Paul Moreno said the safety checks are important.
"It's like you go to the dentist for a checkup, this is a checkup for your gas meter," he continued.
Moreno said they will be checking for atmospheric corrosion or any external rust, or any other obvious issues like weight on the meter or other damage.
For your safety, PG&E wants you to know contractors will be dressed in PG&E gear. Also, they will have a photo ID and fact sheet.
You can ask for to confirm the employment of the inspectors from PG&E.
Moreno said nobody will ask to enter your home during the safety inspections.
