CHICO, Calif – Bidwell Oaks Apartments caught fire around 3:26 p.m. Saturday.

Chico Fire Battalion Chief, John Kelso said the calls came in for a tree fire, but when the fire department arrived, all three palm trees were on fire and it was threatening the building.

The fire affected two apartments on the southeast side of the building near the corner of Salem St. and West 8th St.

The apartment complex is three stories tall and Kelso said they evacuated over 35 people from the building.

Chico Police worked alongside Chico Fire by blocking off several streets to remove any traffic from the area.

Lauren Edwards who lives in the apartment complex said she called 911 to report the fire after she saw it burning the palm trees and move to a bush closer to the building.

Edwards said several people living there ran outside immediately and started warning others that were still in their apartments.

The cause of the fire is unknown.
