CHICO, Calif. - The Osher Lifelong Learning Institute (OLLI) will be starting a new community speaker series topic on elder abuse with a focus on financial abuse.
The 2019 Fall Community Speaker Series is 'How to Protect Yourself & Those You Love as We Age,' with a special focus on financial abuse. The series will be at the Chico Masonic Family Center, on Wednesday, Oct. 9 from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m.
The event is free and open to the public, refreshments will be served.
According to OLLI, financial abuse is the fastest growing form of abuse of elderly people. "For every one case of elder abuse, 24 are not reported," Nikolai from OLLI said.
To help others better understand this topic, OLLI will hear from a panel of three people who work with topic on a daily basis. Those members are David Beveridge, Passages, Long Term Care Ombudsman; Jill Anchordoguy, Adult Protective Services; Debbie Anderson, Victim Advocate, Butte County District Attorney's office.
Also joining will be agencies who deal with elder abuse, those agencies will have a table with material and a staff member prepared to talk to others and answer questions. The agency fair will begin at 11:30 a.m. for about 20 minutes before the official program starts.
The agencies joining will be, Adult Protective Services, Butte County District Attorney's Office, Passages, Enloe, Altum Wealth Financial Services.
