OROVILLE, Calif. – Roads were closed all afternoon near at the Budget Inn in Oroville.
Oroville Police Chief Joe Deal says, “The P.O.P team was following up on leads that there was a wanted felon in the room.”
Investigators say the stand-off lasting almost five hours was between Oroville PD and 34 year old Jeremiah Weed.
“He has active warrants for his arrest and there are fresh charges from the incident last week where he was involved in a vehicle pursuit with our problem oriented policing team, our P.O.P team, and during that pursuit he attempted to strike their vehicles so he does have pending charges,” said Deal.
Police dogs were at the scene as officers asked for neighboring rooms and houses behind the Inn to be evacuated.
Deal says, “The reason those evacuations were made was because the subject in this case has a history of being armed so it was all for public safety we just all wanted to be safe as possible.”
Police say Weed moved from his room to another tunneling through the attic.
After attempting to cut a hole in the bathroom to escape, his efforts failed. After some time, Weed surrendered.
Deal concluded, “We're very happy that this incident although it was four and a half hours long there were no injuries on the part of the officers or any of the subjects involved and we were able to bring this to a peaceful resolution.”
