Oroville, Calif. -- A new Oroville barbershop is getting a lot of buzz.
Off The Top Barbershop & Family Salon just opened 9 months ago in Oroville, and it's gained a lot of popularity, particularly with the autistic community.
7-yea- old Vincent San Juan has autism, which means there's a lot of sensory issues that come from haircuts.
For many kids, a trip to the barber is a quick and easy visit, but for those with autism, this can prove to be more of a challenge.
"It took us a year to find a barber that was going to be calm and collected and let him do his thing. We've had to leave mid haircut, we've had patches before. I've shaved it myself trying to get the job done and it was really hard," said Jazzmine San Juan, Vincent's mother.
A child with autism can be sensitive to things like the noise hair clippers make or the sensation of cutting hair.
"It's really nice because autistic kids, they get older. He's going to be an adult, so it's nice to know he can have a regular experience," said San Juan.
The San Juan family's long search for a barber has finally ended.
"I like to get on their level, explain to them what we're going to do, put them in a chair, let them touch my tools so they're assured nothing's going to hurt them," said Shane Stafford, co-owner and barber at Off the Top Barbershop on Montgomery Street.
The barbershop opened 9 months ago and the community is buzzing about how well Stafford works with autistic kids.
"I'm telling you, we've tried so many places, we've had so many bad haircuts. Thank goodness for Shane because the struggle was real!" said San Juan.
If you would like to visit the barbershop, it is located at 1911 Montgomery St in Oroville.
