OROVILLE, Calif. – An Oroville man was arrested by police after a hit-and-run collision killed a Berry Creek man.

Around 9 a.m. Sunday, a traffic collision happened near Nelson and Fogg Avenues in Oroville. As officers were driving to the scene, Oroville PD dispatch told them witnesses reported seeing a man leaving the area of the collision on foot.

OPD Officers and medical personnel located 57-year-old Justin Neva, of Berry Creek, lying on the sidewalk, unresponsive, where the collision happened. OPD and medical personnel said they performed life-saving measures on Neva – however, he was pronounced dead at the scene.

While Officers were investigating the collision, Oroville Police and Fire Dispatch received information the driver who fled the scene had called and provided his current location. Authorities arrived at the provided location and met with the driver, 30-year-old Andrew Arrieta, of Oroville.

Authorities determined through the investigation that Neva, was standing next to his parked vehicle on Nelson Ave. Police said Arrieta was traveling westbound on Nelson Ave. and veered off to the north shoulder colliding with Neva’s vehicle and trailer which struck Neva.

Arrieta was later arrested for Hit and Run causing injury/death and was booked into the Butte County Jail, according to OPD. His bail is set at $160,000.00.

It was a bright and breezy Friday for northern California, however the wind has been much stronger over Modoc County where a High Wind Warning is in effect through this evening. Stronger wind and cooler air will define our weather Saturday.
