UPDATE: 3:52 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 6, 2020 – Police officers have identified an elderly woman who died after being hit by a car in southeast Chico Thursday morning.
Police said 92-year-old Patricia Coombes was crossing the road, heading south on Yosemite Dr., using a walker when a driver identified as 55-year-old Jiang Junda, struck her. Coombes fell and hit her head, causing deadly injuries.
Officers said Junda was traveling no faster than 10 miles an hour.
Junda said the sun was in his eyes and he didn’t see Coombes crossing the street, according to police. Junda did not show any symptoms of intoxication and voluntarily submitted to a blood test. Police say Junda will not be charged in the accident.
The roadway was closed for approximately 5 hours. Anyone else who may have witnessed the collision is asked to contact the Chico Police Traffic Division at 530-897-4970.
CHICO, Calif. - One person is dead after a car crash Thursday in southeast Chico. Police were on scene around 8 a.m. on Idyllwild Circle.
Officers said they blocked Idyllwild between Goldeneye Ct. and Yosemite Dr. after a vehicle hit a pedestrian.
Action News Now spoke with a neighbor who said she was shocked to learn the news.
"It's horrible," said neighbor, Patty Watson. "We have a lot of people obviously in this area out early in the morning running, walking their dogs. I saw two bicycle people this morning."
Action News Now is working to learn the name of the person killed and what led up to the crash. The road did reopen around 10 a.m.
