UPDATE 1:20 p.m.
- The California Highway Patrol said a Sacramento couple fled and hid from authorities following a fatal multi-car crash on Saturday at Highway 99 near a Gridley Cemetery.

According to CHP, at about 11 p.m. a 1995 Toyota Camry driven by John Gieck, 43, of Sacramento and Kayla Race, 29, of Sacramento as a passenger, was going southbound on Highway 99 north of Ord Ranch Road when it suddenly crossed over the center line into the path of oncoming traffic.

The left front of the Camry collided into a northbound 2017 Toyota Rav 4, holding three people from Chico, that’s when the 2017 Rav 4 lost control into the southbound lanes directly in front of a 2015 Rav 4, a vehicle that was behind Gieck’s car.

The 2015 Rav 4 had no time to react and it collided with the 2017 Rav 4, killing a 68-year-old man who was a passenger inside the 2017 Rav 4.

After the crash, Gieck and Race fled the scene traveling southbound on Highway 99 and with the help of Butte County Sheriff’s Office and CHP Air Support they located the couple hiding in the Gridley Cemetery, said the CHP.

Alcohol was considered a factor in the crash, Gieck was arrested and booked at Butte County Jail, but Race was not arrested.

Both survivors inside the 2017 Toyota Rav 4 either had minor to moderate injuries and were transported to different hospitals around the North State.

BIGGS, Calif. - The California Highway Patrol said they responded to a three-car crash that killed one person on Saturday night near the Gridley-Biggs Cemetery, the driver of the third vehicle fled on foot.

According to the CHP website, the incident happened just after 11 p.m. near Highway 99 and Ord Ranch Road.

The Gridley Police Department was also at the scene where they searched for a third vehicle involved and called the air unit to search for the driver, who fled on foot, said CHP.

There was no further information available about a possible capture of the driver who fled on foot.
