REDDING, Calif. - The Redding Fire Department says that one person died in a fire on Tuesday night.

At 2:20 p.m., Redding Fire responded to the structure fire at a triplex on Milo Ave. in Redding.

Crews say they found the person perished inside of a unit billowing heavy smoke. The victim has not been identified and the cause of death is pending a coroner's autopsy.

Redding Fire investigators report that smoking started the fire.

The department also reports a cat and bird died in the fire.
