North state doctor loses license over alleged sexual misconduct

Romeo Abaya Jr. has accepted the stipulated surrender of his medical license over multiple allegations of sexual misconduct.

The medical board of California has announced that doctor Romeo Abaya Jr. has had his license surrendered due to multiple allegations that Abaya performed unnecessary sexual examinations on patients. The accusation of these actions came from two male patients only identified as F.M. and J.J. who both say they had inappropriate advances from him. J.J. also alleged he was prescribed opioids for his condition even when doctor Abaya knew of his past substance abuse problems.

Dr. Abaya’s former employer the Lassen Medical Group has issued a statement on the matter saying:
“In early 2016, Red Oaks medical group (known at the time as Lassen medical group) became aware that one of its physicians was engaging in unacceptable behavior with more than one patient. In February 2016, after conducting its own immediate third-party investigation, red oaks medical group reported the investigation findings to the California medical board and the physician resigned at that time. After further investigation by the California medical board, the physician recently surrendered his license to practice medicine in the state of California. The safety and health or our patients is our top priority. When we receive reports of physician misconduct, we take the complaints very seriously and conduct a thorough investigation.”

Sexual misconduct wasn’t the only reason for his license to be revoked. The medical board states, it was a number of things that led to the decision. Carlos Villatoro, the public information manager for the Medical Board of California says that the board has charged him with “unprofessional conduct… gross negligence… repeated negligent acts… sexual misconduct and inadequate and improper record keeping.”

The stipulated surrender of his license means that Abaya will lose his license to practice without the option for appeal for 3 years. After that time he will be able to appeal but only if he accepts all allegations as true. All of our attempts to reach out to Abaya as well as the Trinity Community Clinic where he was last employed in have failed and his office line shows as busy whenever called.
