New York struggles with coronavirus, US deaths top 1,000

NEW YORK - New York authorities are mobilizing to head off a potential public health disaster in the country's largest city as U.S. deaths from the coronavirus rise above 1,000 and President Trump urges Congress to act on a critical aid package.

As of 8 p.m. on March 25, Johns Hopkins University is reporting 1,041 deaths nationally with 280 deaths in New York state alone.

With New York's emergence as the nation's hot spot, a makeshift morgue has been set up outside Bellevue Hospital.

The coordinator of the White House’s coronavirus task force is warning New York cases could grow and is urging residents to follow public health recommendations.

Meanwhile in hard-hit Spain, lawmakers agreed to extending a state of emergency two more weeks, for a full month.
