Redding CHP K9 Team Now Trained & Ready

Kastov is the newest staff member of the CHP Northern Division in Redding. He is a dog, but not just any dog. He is a highly trained K9 officer who just graduated from the CHP Academy with his handler, Officer Todd Newman.

WEST SACRAMENTO, Calif. - Thurday was graduation day in Sacramento for the latest new California Highway Patrol recruits.  Among the new graduates are Officer Todd Newman and his K9 partner Kastov from Redding.

For 13 weeks these patrol and narcotics detection canine teams worked together, culminating in today's graduation at the CHP Academy in West Sacramento. Now the graduates will be deployed across the state.

Officer Newman and his dog Kastov will be working out of Redding's CHP Northern Division. Officer Newman has been with the CHP for 18 years, and with the K9 program for 10 years. His previous K9 partners were Squad and Cato.

There are two canine teams graduating from Valley Division of the CHP, which include Officer Eric Piegeon and his canine partner, Rhino, and Officer Gregory Barker and his canine partner, Edo. Marysvill/Yuba City to Chico are included in the Valley Division of the CHP.
