CHICO, Calif. – There is a nationwide recognition for local farmers!

Aug. 2 - 8 is National Farmers Market Week. The effort is coordinated by the Farmers Market Coalition.

This year’s theme is encouraging the public to shop for local produce and support local farmers for season goods and products during the pandemic.

Action News Now visited the Wednesday Chico Famers Market and talked with a 36-year farming veteran of the Northern California region.

Marie Bordin-Huitt is an Almond grower. She says farmer's markets are invaluable for economic success, especially during the coronavirus pandemic.

“With everything that is going on right now, it is important to the farmer, so that we can sell our products locally to consumers direct and we can make a better profit.”

Bordin-Huitt says this year she is expected a larger than usual almond crop and is looking forward to a busy market season for the fall.

Regarding the coronavirus and safety precautions, Bordin-Huitt says she sees most visitors following safety guidelines of wearing masks and practicing social distancing.
