CHICO, Calif. -- Some of the largest schools throughout Shasta, Tehama, and Butte counties, are adjusting sports schedules because of the coronavirus.

These schools are in the Eastern Athletic League, and administrators recently met to discuss what athletics this school year might look like.

Schools like Pleasant Valley and Chico High School have a partnership with Oak Bridge for students foregoing in-person instruction.

No matter which option of schooling they choose, they can still participate in any sport they play.

Team sports that play traditionally in the fall will be moved to next year.

Sports like golf, tennis, cross country, and swimming have a chance to still be played this year barring approval from coaches'.

Director of Secondary Education John Shepherd says, "We have an obligation to do everything we can for these kids. The past two years have been a challenge for them and we know that social, emotional engagement, specifically athletics, definitely motivates kids to succeed academically and we need to do what we can to support that."

Shepherd also told me the next challenges involve setting up travel and navigating through the stages each county may be in with the coronavirus.

Action News Now checked with Shepherd about students who play multiple sports and potential scheduling conflicts.

He says while there may be an overlap depending on the sport, administrators are working on a system to help ease that concern.
