UPDATE 5:40 p.m. Sunday, Mar. 31, 2019 - Action News Now spoke with a Chico State student about her concerns after Saturday's shooting incident near W. 3rd St. at Cedar St. in Chico.

The location was the scene of a big party, and some of the partygoers got into a fight, according to authorities.

Investigators have determined that someone pulled out a gun and fired several shots, hitting two people.

Chico police officers located a young woman who was suffering from a gunshot wound to the chest.

They later learned that another male victim had been driven to the Enloe Medical Center emergency room. The hospital was locked down for a short period of time, said a hospital spokesperson.

Action News Now spoke with several students who shared their anxiety concerning the incident. They were not surprised, however, that this kind of incident occurred on a holiday weekend.

UPDATE 9:40 a.m. Sunday, Mar. 31, 2019 - The Chico Police Department has released more information about the shooting incident that occurred in Chico Saturday night close to 8:00 p.m. in the area of W. 3rd St. at Cedar St., but said they have very little information from witnesses at the scene of the shooting, which was at a party that was attended by hundreds of people.

Officers responded to reports of a shooting and upon arrival discovered a young woman suffering from a gunshot wound to the chest. Shortly after that, the officers were told another victim had been driven to the hospital emergency room by friends.

Police say they are only in the preliminary stages of this investigation.

They said it appears that during a large party, some attendees got into a fight. Someone produced a firearm and fired several shots which appear to have struck a vehicle. The occupants of that vehicle drove to Enloe Medical Center to get help for a wounded man.

The young woman was shot in the chest was unrelated to the party shooting, according to officers.  They said she was a college student that was in the wrong place at the wrong time.

Police said Sunday morning that both of the gunshot victims are in stable condition. The emergency room at Enloe Medical Center was locked down on Saturday night as a safety precaution. A hospital spokesperson said the lockdown was in place for a very short time for the safety of staff and patients.

If anyone who was in the area of the party can provide more information, you are asked to contact the Chico Police Department at (530) 897-4900 and reference report number 19-02182.
