PLACERVILLE, Calif. - El Dorado County Sheriff Deputies launched into a chase after a suspect stole one of their patrol cars on Wednesday morning.

The police chase ended on Highway 50 near downtown Placerville.

This happened at the South Lake Tahoe office during a shift change. The sheriff's office said a deputy left the car running outside the station before it was stolen. They said the suspect, Jacob Wolfe, was able to get away because the car did not have certain safety features.

"They're made with a shut-off switch that way we can leave the vehicle running and take the keys out," Sergeant Anthony Prencipe said.  "And if it goes to be put into drive, it'll automatically shutdown. Our older vehicles, which we still have a few left up there, aren't equipped with this."

The sheriff's office said having the car unattended is not against protocol. There is equipment in the car that must be left on at all times.
