UPDATE: (3:55 p.m.) – The Shasta County Coroner's Office identified the man who was killed after walking into traffic on Interstate 5 near Cypress Ave.

Coroner investigators said 28-year-old Kevin Gustavo Cardenas of Whittier, California, was killed on Monday, Dec. 7. The California Highway Patrol (CHP) said a big rig hit and killed the man who walked into traffic.

Investigators said this happened just after 5 a.m. on the northbound lane of I-5, south of the Cypress Avenue under crossing. Authorities said the big rig driver was going 55 miles per hour when he hit the pedestrian – who was thrown to the right shoulder and killed. The big rig had moderate damage to the right front bumper.

The case remains under investigation by the California Highway Patrol.
