CHICO, Calif. - Bryan Dawson pleaded guilty to "gross vehicular manslaughter while intoxicated" with an enhancement of leaving the scene of a crime.
Prosecutors said that Dawson was so drunk when the crime occurred, he did not realize he ran over anyone.
20-year-old Maria Flores was struck and killed when Dawson ran his car up on the sidewalk on Nord Avenue, in December of 2016.
District Attorney Mike Ramsey said in handing down the sentence, Judge Jesus Rameriz noted that Dawson already served a year in jail, expressed remorse, had no criminal history and was enrolled for two years in a residential treatment program for alcohol.
Ramsey thinks a state prison sentence would have been more appropriate.
