SHASTA COUNTY, Calif. - One person died in a crash in Shasta County Wednesday around 1:30 a.m., according to California Highway Patrol.

CHP said the man was driving a 1994 Chevrolet S10 and was traveling westbound on Highway 44 just east of Chateau Dr. Officers do not know the speed the vehicle was traveling at.

The driver then began to drive southerly and off the south shoulder, CHP said. The vehicle crashed into a ditch before hitting a tree on the vehicle's right side.

Officials said the driver was partially ejected from the vehicle as it began to continue travel southwesterly.

The vehicle and the driver then crashed into a tree before coming to a rest and facing west on the south shoulder of the highway.

48-year-old James Louthian was a passenger in the vehicle and sustained major internal injuries, CHP said.

Officers said both the men were not wearing their seat belts.
