SHASTA COUNTY, Calif. - The Shasta County Sheriff's Office says a vigilant neighbor alerted deputies to a burglary where one man was arrested on May 22. The department says they are still looking for the other suspect.

The burglary happened at 5:30 a.m. on Friday when a man called dispatch saying his neighbor's property was being burglarized on the 13000 block of Pit Street in the City of Shasta Lake.

Officials say they learned from the neighbor the suspects were leaving the property in a pickup towing a trailer and ATV. The ATV, the neighbor said, belonged to the property owner.

Nearby deputies responded and saw the pickup near the intersection of Hill and Lake Boulevards. Deputies pulled the suspects over and say one of the two fled on foot. Officials say they detained the driver but could not find the passenger who fled.

The truck belonged to the driver Derrek Bauer, who had a small amount of meth and, in the passenger compartment, a loaded gun, according to officials.

The owner of the ATV met deputies at the intersection and confirmed it and some additional stolen property in the truck was all his.

Bauer, who is a convicted felon, was booked into the Shasta County Jail on charges of:

  • burglary
  • vehicle theft
  • possession of a stolen vehicle
  • possession of stolen property
  • possession of burglary tools
  • felon in possession of a firearm
  • felon in possession of ammunition
  • possession of meth
  • possession of drug paraphernalia

Officials say the identity of the suspect who fled is unknown but they did describe him as a white male adult with a thin build wearing a fluorescent green construction vest and blue jeans.

If you have any further information about this burglary, you are asked to call SHASCOM at 530-245-6540.
