OROVILLE, Calif - Fire officials say you could face a lot of problems if you're cited for starting a wildfire.

On Saturday, 57-year-old Tracy Hinton was cited for allegedly starting the Oregon fire near Oroville.

Cal fire says Hinton was burning "trash" on the property which quickly spread blackening 40 acres.

Then just a few days ago, another man was cited for igniting the Apple Fire.

That fire, which burned in Tehama County, grew to nearly 3,000 acres burning three homes and two outbuildings.

Fire officials say the District Attorney will now decide if they'll press charges.

“They will determine if there will be a case. And if there is a case the person in question will be given his rights to a jury trial,” said Butte County Fire Chief John Gaddie

If the individuals to go to court and are found guilty they could face the potential of paying cost recovery which can be very significant.

For example, the teen accused of starting the Oregon state fire last year has been ordered to pay more than $ 36 million in restitution.
