Chico, Calif. -- A local elementary school underwent a lockdown Tuesday morning in response to a possible security threat near the school.

Hooker Oak Elementary School underwent a 'Code Red' lockdown a little after 8:30 a.m., which means all students go into classrooms, lock the doors and close the blinds.

According to Chico Police Commander Billy Aldridge, Chico Police were responding to reports of a fight between a man and a woman near the school on the 1200 block of Arbutus.  According to police, the man reportedly owned a gun.

When Chico Police arrived to the 1200 block of Arbutus, they did not find the man or woman at the scene.

The lockdown lasted for seven minutes and parents were notified after the lockdown ended.

Assistant superintendent of the Chico Unified School District Jim Hanlon said parents were notified after the lockdown ended because the school district's priority is to make sure the safety of the students is put first.

Additionally, Hanlon said the school notified parents after the lockdown ended because the lockdown lasted for a short period of time.
