RED BLUFF, Calif -  It’s an unfortunate truth but mass school shootings are happening all too often.

So Shasta College security officials tell Action News Now its important to have a lockdown system in place.

On Wednesday, Shasta College Tehama Campus was faced with the scary reality that a man with a gun was less than a mile away from campus.

Although students have been let out for summer, 16 people were on campus when a lockdown was initiated.

When speaking to officers on Thursday they say in light of the recent mass shooting like Rancho Tehama, it’s best to have a system in place that can protect your students.

”We do believe A.L.I.C.E has been successful in situations. and I would say the run, hide, fight model has been successful in situations that did save lives,” said Lonnie Seay, Director of Campus Safety.

Rancho Tehama also had a similar system in place which was credited for saving dozens of lives in that situation.

Since implementing A.L.I.C.E on their campus' school officers say they've practice drills quite often.

To be exact they've had one mass training a year at all schools, and 1,500 students have been trained throughout the semester.

The trainings focus on alerting officers quickly, how to properly lockdown, evacuate, and if need be how to fight back.

The last two days saw quite a bit of rain in Northern California. Today we could see more but the showers look to be more isolated today than in previous days. Highs today are expected to reach the upper 50s to lower 60s.
