BUTTE COUNTY, Calif.- As President Trump urges schools to reopen during this coronavirus outbreak, at least one local school district here at home says they will be open for in person classes this Fall.

Helen M. Wilcox School in South Oroville is one of the schools that is planning on reopening. Action News Now spoke with one parent who says the school is giving them an option to either send their children to school for in-person classes or take online courses.

In an email sent by The Palermo Union School District sent out to parents, it says based on their most recent surveys they are preparing to reopen on August 12th.
It says they are offering two different models. One is the traditional model that gives children the opportunity to come to school in person for 5 days a week.

That model will incorporate safety measures like sanitation, social distancing and face coverings to keep students safe.

The other option is to have your children take online classes and have either in person or online weekly meetings with teachers
One parent says she’s choosing to send her children back to school for in-person classes.

"I feel pretty safe sending them, my kids are good about wearing their mask. I've explained whats going on. They know they aren't supposed to share anything, no hugs, and constantly wash their hands and if they have to sneeze or cough, do it away from everybody." said parent Jessica Flores.

Another parent told Action News Now that she prefers the online teaching method because it allows her to be more involved in her children's education.

The email sent out by the school also says they will have extra sanitation, use PPE, perform health screenings and follow social distancing.
Another parent says she plans on sending her daughter to school here in person too because she doesn’t have childcare available.

Palermo Union School District officials say out of approximately 600 parents surveyed, 80% have chosen the in-person model, while 20% have decided to go with the online courses.

They also say that for now,  they are planning on offering the two different models but things could change before the beginning of the school year.

Classes are set to start on August 12th.
