Lake Oroville Still a Major Holiday Destination

Despite low lake levels and a lot of construction on the spillway, the Diversion Pool is open this weekend to kayakers and several main boat launches are still open.

Butte County, Calif.-- Friday through the 4th of July, the Themalito Diversion Pool on Lake Oroville will be open as far as 3 miles up from the put-in off Thompson Flat Cemetery Road.

If you're a hiker, the Brad Freeman Trail along the north side of the water will also open up for the three miles, and a portion of the Dan Beebe trail on the south side of the diversion pool is also open today but that one will stay open all Summer long.

You might remember, the DWR did the same thing last Memorial Day weekend to give the Keiwit Construction crew a break from spillway repairs and to let people get out and enjoy the natural resources.

It's all under the watch of the California Department of State Parks, so keep in mind the rules are the same out there as on Lake Oroville.

This Fourth of July weekend, Lake Oroville will set nearly 100 feet from capacity.

It was a decision made by the DWR to allow construction on the upper chute of the new spillway.

They're on a November 1st deadline to get most of their work done - and right now, they want to keep they lake below 813 feet at which point the water goes above the radial gates of the upper chute, and apparently there are bedrock issues in that section that need to be addressed.

But at 806 feet, where it sits Friday morning, we're looking at losing boat launches.

As of Friday there are 3 at Lime Saddle, at least five open at Bidwell Canyon, at least two at Loafer Creek and one car-top ramp at Foreman Creek recreational areas accessible.

The spillway boat launch, which is the largest one, is closed due to construction.

Some other options for you if the lake is just too crowded? Try the Forebay Aquatics Center or kayak the diversion pool.
