Keeping your distance

Social distancing is one of the top ways to limit the spread of illnesses, but can be very hard to follow entirely.

CHICO, Calif. - We've heard the term social distancing before but what does it exactly mean?

It means staying away from highly populated areas, maintaining a safe distance, preferably about six feet, but that might be a little bit difficult so this video shows what keeping that preferred distance looks like.

The pole we used is ten feet wide. We were still about a foot short on each side of the pole.

It kind of makes life a little bit more difficult when you're just roaming the streets.

Going to banks and grocery stores are necessary which means you're passing by people all the time making life a lot harder.

Action News Now spoke with pedestrians on how difficult staying socially distant can be.

Chico resident Christian Chavez says, “I think people are just doing their best to use their best judgment. Outside of that…I think it's a bit unrealistic.”

Keeping your distance when living in everyday life can be next to impossible. So while perfection may be unattainable, you can still be cautious.

Susan Krug teaches at Chico State and Butte College. She says, “…it's in my mind. certainly with surfaces especially, but yeah just being aware of where my hands have been, washing frequently, not directly breathing on people, or letting people directly breathe on me. Those are kind of the things I've been doing and keeping some distance.”

While baby steps might be the way to go here, it certainly is a lot easier said than done.

Staying hot and hazy today, but relief from the heat is on the way for the middle of this week. We'll also have the potential for mountain thunderstorms on Wednesday. The heat returns this weekend.
