REDDING, Calif. – A suspect is on the loose after attempting to steal a Redding man's truck full of firearms and hunting gear.
Early Thursday morning, officers with the Redding Police Department investigated a report of a stolen vehicle. Officers spoke with Parrish Cremeans, who told RPD he is a hunting guide and was preparing for a scheduled turkey hunting trip with a teen who is diagnosed with cancer.
Cremeans said after he loaded his pickup truck with the essentials for the trip, he briefly went inside his home to grab his coffee, leaving the truck unoccupied and running. Cremeans said when he was inside, he heard his truck being driven away and walked outside to find his truck missing.
Several firearms were inside the truck at the time of the theft. About 34 minutes later, a passing motorist noticed a matching vehicle in a ditch off the road, located near Canyon Creek Road and Starburst Drive.
When officers responded to the scene, the vehicle was located unoccupied. The firearms and hunting gear were also missing from the truck.
A CHP helicopter and RPD K-9 Otto assisted in the search for the suspect. K-9 Otto led officers to a wooded area located west of Starburst Drive. During the track, Otto located several stolen items from the truck, including hunting gear and all the firearms, according to RPD.
The items appeared to have been hidden as if the suspect intended on returning to the area to collect them, RPD said. The vehicle, firearms, and hunting gear were returned to Cremeans. However, no suspect was found during the search.
