Investigators arrest Redding man for arson

Investigators arrested a Redding man after they say he admitted to starting a fire near the Sacramento River Trail Wednesday evening.

REDDING, Calif. – A Redding man was arrested on suspicion of arson Wednesday near Hilltop Drive, according to the Redding Fire Department.

Firefighters said they located a man setting fire to grass at the Sacramento River Trail access off of Hilltop Drive Wednesday morning.

An Investigator with the Redding Fire Department contacted the man, Curtis Wayne Smith. Investigators said Smith admitted to intentionally starting the fire. He was arrested and booked into the Shasta County Jail for arson.

Crews were able to quickly extinguish the fire and no injuries were reported.

It took a few hours, but the sun broke through the clouds over most of northern California Tuesday afternoon. The low clouds, fog and light rain showers return to the valley Wednesday, with snowy weather in the mountains.
