Oroville CHP arrests driver in deadly crash on Highway 99

The CHP has arrested a driver following a fatal crash in a stolen vehicle in Oroville Thursday evening.

UPDATE: 11:29 a.m., Friday, July 31, 2020 - The CHP has arrested a driver following a fatal crash in a stolen vehicle in Oroville Thursday evening.

Oroville CHP said they noticed a tan-colored 2018 Kia sedan driving recklessly eastbound on Highway 162 west, near Midway Road. CHP officers attempted to conduct an enforcement stop, however, the driver began to speed and a pursuit ensued.

Officers followed the Kia sedan as it turned northbound onto Highway 99, going towards Chico. For reasons which officers say are still under investigation, the vehicle left the roadway and overturned several times, which caused the passenger to die, according to CHP.

The vehicle was determined to be stolen, the driver was arrested for multiple felony violations, the CHP said. 

This collision is under investigation, CHP added that alcohol and/or drugs appear to be a factor in the crash.


UPDATE: 11:35 p.m., Thursday, July 30, 2020 - CHP officials said the chase started in Oroville. Officials are waiting for Oroville CHP to arrive on the scene to handover the investigation.

Highway 99 was shut down in both directions between Highways 149 and 162 as officers investigated. The crash happened just north of Nelson Road on Highway 99, north of Gridley.

Investigators remained on the scene for several hours. Action News Now is working to learn more.


BUTTE COUNTY, Calif. - Highway 99 is closed in both directions as the California Highway Patrol works to investigate a fatal crash.

CHP says one person has died after a pursuit where they were being followed for reckless driving. According to officers on scene, the driver lost control at a high rate of speed.

The road closure begins at Highway 99 at Highway 162 and goes north to Highway 149.

Traffic is being diverted to Highway 70, at this time.

CHP says the road will be closed until about 11 p.m. or midnight on July 30.
