Human remains located east of Chico

An investigation is underway after human remains were located east of Chico over the weekend.

CHICO, Calif. – An investigation is underway after human remains were located east of Chico over the weekend.

On Saturday, Feb. 27, around 9:18 a.m., Chico Police said it received a report of human remains in the area east of Chico near Highway 32.

Chico PD said the person who reported the remains was in the area walking their dog when they located them and immediately called police. Officers responded to the area and secured the scene.

The Butte County Sheriff’s Office and Chico State Anthropology unit assisted Chico Police to process and recover the remains.

The Butte County Coroner’s Office is currently in the process of trying to determine the cause of death and the identity of the remains. Chico Police said they’re in the early stages of this investigation, once they determine the identity of the remains, they will provide an update.
