CHICO, Calif. - After a local group funded fecal tests in July, Action News Now took to doing our own tests in local Chico waterways.
"One Chico", an independent interest group, funded the July tests. Ones that showed slightly elevated numbers of fecal matter in the 5-mile pool.
We did our own tests of dipping a cup into the different bodies of water around Chico and collecting samples.
Our test showed a dramatic uptick of fecal in the water, especially in Sycamore west.
Was it collected properly? Experts say the best way to collect the water for a test would be to use a pole and reach out to the middle of the body of water to avoid any dirt altering the test.
The City of Chico conducted a test, taking a sample one day later on July 28. Their test shows much lower numbers of fecal in the water.
The city also tested for E. Coli in both Sycamore east and west. Sycamore west showing slightly higher numbers. All of those numbers under the threshold.
